Deafblind Awareness Week 2026

This Deafblind Awareness Week 2026, we’re standing alongside communities around the world to increase understanding of deafblindness and recognise the diverse experiences of people living with both sight and hearing loss. Across the UK, over 450,000 people are deafblind, but many continue to face challenges due to a lack of awareness, accessibility, and the support they need to live fully and independently.

Deafblind Awareness Week shines a light on the experiences of people living with both vision and hearing loss, and the importance of making everyday life more accessible and inclusive in the UK, more than 450,000 people are deafblind. While it can affect individuals of any age, it is more commonly experienced later in life as changes in vision and hearing become more frequent with age.

At Derbyshire Opticians, we are committed to providing inclusive, patient-focused eye care and providing support with visual impairment. We believe everyone should have equal access to clear communication, quality eye care, and the support they need to live independently.

This week is an opportunity to deepen understanding of deafblindness, acknowledge the daily challenges many people face, and recognise the strength and independence of the deafblind community.

Understanding Deafblindness

Deafblindness is a combined loss of sight and hearing that can affect communication, access to information, and independence in daily life. It exists on a spectrum, meaning the level of vision and hearing loss varies greatly from person to person.

There are two main types of Deafblindness:

  • Congenital deafblindness - Where combined sight and hearing loss is present from birth or early childhood, affecting development, learning, and communication.
  • Acquired deafblindness - Where dual sensory loss develops later in life, often linked to conditions such as usher syndrome, age-related sensory decline, illness, or injury.

Because each person experiences deafblindness differently, support needs and communication methods must always be tailored to the individual.

Why Does This Awareness Week Matter?

Many of the barriers faced by deafblind people are not always apparent. Everyday activities such as accessing information, attending appointments, or getting around independently can require additional support or adjustments.

Deafblind Awareness Week helps to:

  • Improve understanding of dual sense loss
  • Improve awareness
  • Encourage more accessible environments and services
  • Highlight available support and resources
  • Promote equality across healthcare, education, and the wider community

Greater awareness helps ensure people with deafblindness can take part in everyday life with confidence and dignity.

The Role of Eye Care

For people with hearing loss, vision often becomes even more important for communication, safety, and independence. This makes regular eye care essential.

Routine eye exams can help to:

  • Detect eye conditions at an early stage
  • Monitor changes in vision over time
  • Support timely treatment or management
  • Maintain long-term visual wellbeing
  • Improve access to low vision support where needed

At Derbyshire Opticians, we take a personalised approach to care, ensuring every patient feels understood, supported, and communicated with clearly at every stage of their eyecare journey.

Supporting Someone Who is Deafblind

Check before helping

Always ask if support is needed and how best to provide it.

Communicate clearly

Introduce yourself, speak directly to the person, and ensure they are aware of your presence.

Make information more accessible

Offer information in formats such a large print or accessible digital options where appropriate.

Be patient

Allow extra time for communication and remain open to different ways of interacting.

Support Deafblind organisations

Charities such as DeafblindUK, Sense, and Deafblind International provide essential services, advocacy, and support. Donations and awareness help them continue this vital work.

Raising Awareness in 2026

During Deafblind Awareness Week, Derbyshire Opticians encourages everyone to learn more about deafblindness and reflect on how communication and accessibility can be improved in everyday life.

Understanding leads to inclusion. Small changes in awareness and approach can make a significant difference in helping people feel supported and included.
