Summer Eye Care Tips hero image

Summer is the perfect time to get outdoors, enjoy holidays, and make the most of longer days. However, while many people remember to protect their skin from the sun, eye protection is often overlooked.

From UV exposure to dry eyes and contact lens discomfort, the warmer months can present a number of challenges for your eye health. Here are some simple ways to keep your eyes protected this summer.

Protect Your Eyes From UV Rays

UV radiation can affect your eyes throughout the year, but exposure is often higher during summer when we spend more time outdoors.

Over time, excessive UV exposure can increase the risk of developing eye conditions such as cataracts and damage to the retina. That’s why choosing sunglasses with full UVA and UVB protection is so important.

When shopping for sunglasses, look beyond the style and ensure they offer proper UV protection. Polarised lenses can also be beneficial, helping to reduce glare from surfaces such as water, roads, and pavements.

For added protection, wear a hat with a brim when spending extended periods outdoors.

Take Extra Care Near Water

Whether you’re relaxing by the pool, enjoying a day at the beach, or heading out on a boat trip, it’s worth remembering that water reflects sunlight and can increase UV exposure to your eyes.

Wind, saltwater, chlorine, and sand can also cause irritation and discomfort, particularly for contact lens wearers.

If you’re swimming, avoid wearing contact lenses in the water, as this can increase the risk of eye infections. If you’d prefer clear vision underwater, prescription swimming goggles are a safer alternative.

How To Prevent Dry, Irritated Eyes

Many people experience dry eyes during summer. Warm weather, air conditioning, travel, and prolonged screen use can all contribute to symptoms such as irritation, redness, and blurred vision.

A few simple habits can help:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  • Use lubricating eye drops if recommended by your optometrist
  • Limit prolonged screen use
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take a break from screens and look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

These small changes can make a noticeable difference to eye comfort.

Looking After Children's Eyes

Children often spend more time outdoors during school holidays, making UV protection especially important.

Children’s eyes allow more UV light to reach the retina than adult eyes, so ensuring they wear quality sunspecs with correct UV protection is essential.

Comfortable, durable frames and a wide-brimmed hat can provide additional protection and encourage healthy habits from an early age.

Summer Contact Lens Do’s and Don’ts

Contact lenses remain a convenient option during summer, but the season can create extra challenges.

Pollen, heat, air conditioning, and windy conditions may cause lenses to feel dry or uncomfortable. Keeping lubrication drops on hand can help maintain comfort throughout the day.

If you’re travelling, it’s always worth packing a spare pair of specs, along with any contact lens solutions and accessories you may need.

Most importantly, remember to remove your lenses before swimming or using hot tubs to reduce the risk of serious eye infections.

Enjoy the Summer Safely

A little preparation can go a long way towards protecting your eyes and maintaining clear, comfortable vision throughout the summer months.
