Optical Coherence Tomography
OCT at our Matlock & Dronfield Practices
The OCT or Optical Coherence Tomography is an advanced 3D scan of the eye that is suitable for people of all ages and is included in the Essential + eye examination.
Why We Recommend OCT
OCT is a non-invasive scan that uses waves of light to take images of the retina, creating a 3D image of the eye.
Once taken these images can provide Optometrists with an instant and early diagnosis of several common eye conditions, allowing suitable treatments to be recommended if required. Including OCT at every eye examination provides our Optometrists with an ongoing record of your eye health.
Regular OCT screening can identify the following common eye conditions:

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye condition where the optic nerve becomes damaged, usually caused by an increase of pressure in the eye due to a build-up of fluid. Early stages of glaucoma often do not have symptoms, meaning regular eye examinations and OCT are essential for detecting and monitoring the condition.

Age-related Macular Degeneration
One of the leading causes of blindness in the UK, age-related macular degeneration is the gradual deterioration of the macular, leading to the loss of your central vision. OCT will identify the earliest signs of AMD and monitor it's progress over time.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is caused by high blood sugar levels damaging the retina, which is a complication of diabetes. There are no symptoms of the condition in the early stages, so it is important to have regular eye examinations and minimise the risk by controlling your diabetes.
